I was thinking about creating a 0-level character generator for the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG, but the good mages over at Purple Sorcerer Games have already done a bang-up job. You simply choose whether you want Hard-mode or Power-mode 0-level characters and voila, you get a spiffy PDF with four characters, replete with stats, occupation, lucky roll and gear. Alternatively, you can roll up level 1 characters to get past the “Peasant Golf” style action.

Additionally, the company is Kickstarting its DCC Companion App for iPad and Android tablets, which looks like a great addition to any table.

It’s even cooler than that. The second generator can randomly generate PCs from levels 1 to 10.

I had a whole lot of fun running a session of Dungeon Crawl Classics back at Wittenberg. We created everybody by hand and ran them through last year’s Level 0 Free RPG Day adventure. Turns out that (unfortunately) half the party survived, but we did have some spectacular deaths including a roasted cow and a wannabe cultist who sided with one of the monsters!

I’m a big fan of DCC, myself, and have thoroughly enjoyed both Sailors on a Starless Sea and the module included in the core book. It’s great fun to try to get my players to think their way through a dungeon as opposed to slashing their way through, see whether they can discover each area’s mysteries, and punish the stupidity they default to all too often.
